Coalition government annual school report, 2011. Part One.

Battle-fatigued is the phrase Special Educational Needs blogger Guerilla Mum Ellen Powers uses (she is currently sadly missing in action from her SEN blog). Come back Ellen – we need you. As I approach the end of term and contemplate a parents evening with my daughter’s soon-to-be Year 2 teacher – battle fatigued is how I feel [...]

West Cheshire College closes nursery

The Chester and District Standard front page  today featured a story on “Parent’s nursery closure  fury”. According to the Standard “Bosses at West Cheshire College have confirmed the ABC nursery in Handbridge will cease to exist in July. The Ellesmere Port campus closed on Friday”. Some 80 families have been affected. Local parents said: “There was no [...]

Karen Reissman speaks at Public Meeting, Guildhall Chester today. Cheshire West Against the Cuts.

Several years since I heard Karen Reissman speak at the radical National Union of Journalists Conference at the Quaker Meeting House in Manchester. Now it seems even here in middle England there is an organised movement against the cuts. Tonight’s Meeting’s focus: “Defending the National Health Service” and it starts at 7.30 p.m. Guildhall Watergate [...]

Phonics/reading test for five and six year olds rejected by the government’s EYFS review panel

Front page Times Educational Supplement today we find an interesting piece by Helen Ward entitled: “Phonics knocked off it’s perch by EYFS review”. in which Helen appears to be highlighting how the findings of the government-sponsored review panel appear to directly contradict coalition government policy on the reading test for five and six year olds. I’m saying ‘coalition government’ policy [...]

In which the writer considers the EYFS Review and only narrowly avoids the use of expletives…

It’s fairly standard these days for a government review to be ‘leaked’ in a targeted way to the press – before it is published. That’s how certain media machines work. Your average PR agency with any clout – knows that public opinion can be influenced by providing journalists with crease-free copy before the event. That [...]

Conservative Party Policy, EYFS review and statement on the reading test for five (and six year olds).

Received some important post this morning from our Member of Parliament. I have my own views on this, but decided it might be interesting to hear reader’s comments first. Your thoughts, readers? Update added 29th. March (realised that the scanned version of this letter had a piece missing) here is the important missing bit – [...]

Will Council Cuts destroy provision for disadvantaged children?

I’d wanted to write my next post with an analysis of the structure of the U.K. government’s review/consultation of the Early Years Foundation Stage in mind – but  I’ve just received Nursery World’s e-newsletter in my in-box and I’m pulling another news item forward: Nursery World reports planned cuts in the London Borough of Westminster which will ‘destroy early [...]

Government review of Early Years Foundation Stage

The long-awaited review of the Early Years Foundation Stage legislation has now been announced. The review has already been the focus of considerable media attention this week and I intend to continue analysing what the government is saying and reactions to this announcement over the next few weeks. The language originally used by organisations which [...]

Open Eye Conference 2010. “The Child the True Foundation” Article in the Telegraph and Dr. Aric Sigman.

The international Open Eye conference I attended two weeks ago received coverage in the national media, including the Telegraph newspaper: They chose the challenging headline “Ban Computers from schools until children reach age 9 says expert”. Dr. Aric Sigman is quoted: “There is evidence to show that introducing information and communications technology (ICT) in the early years [...]
